New Tool for Family Foundations
The Council on Foundations has opened a new database to help family foundations deal with governance, management and legacy issues. The resource, which is open to the public, helps foundations implement the Stewardship Principles for Family Foundations. The database presents foundation interviews, sample documents and resources corresponding to each principle and practice option. The Stewardship Principles and Practice Options for Family Foundations were developed in 2004 by a cross-section of the family philanthropy field.
The Stewardship Principles and the Practice Options for Family Foundations are goals toward which to strive. They correspond to an array of philosophical and practical issues faced by all family foundations. With this document as a framework, family foundation boards and staff can discuss issues before they arise, enabling them to proactively develop thoughtful policy and practice that improve over time.
The Stewardship Principles and Practice Options for Family Foundations are available online at http://bestpractices.cof.org/family/, and are available to the public. Printed brochures of the Principles for distribution to board members can be requested from the Family Foundation Services department at 202/467-0407 or by emailing family@cof.org.
Individual family foundations are also encouraged to submit their own stories and relevant sample documents to the database by contacting the Family Foundation Services department or using the online submission form found on the database at http://bestpractices.cof.org/family/submit.cfm.
